Rihanna

Born:1988
Hometown: Barbados
Quote From Rihanna: "I want to give people a taste of the Caribbean, and show them the fun side of me."

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Rihanna's Bio From the Def Jam Website:

There's nothing like the warm spirit of the Caribbean to re-energize a dry, stale season of the same old song and dance. And with summer fast approaching there couldn't be a better time for Barbados-born singer Rihanna to break into an industry that is eager to celebrate the next big thing. Thanks to multi-platinum island-born superstars like Sean Paul, Shaggy and Elephant Man, the mainstream has been primed for a rhythmic female star to step into the forefront of popular music.

Besides ripping traditional reggae tracks like a seasoned dancehall queen, the stunning 17-year-old Rihanna possesses a powerful singing voice that conjures up feelings and experiences way beyond her years. It's no wonder that all it took was a quick audition with Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, President and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, for the green-eyed beauty to solidify a recording contract with the multi-million dollar record company. While that performance ended up changing her life forever, the sweet natured island girl laughs at her own naiveté at the time. "I was in the lobby shaking!," remembers Rihanna with a healthy dose of her Bajan accent hanging onto every one of her words. "I saw just a little bit of Jay's face down the hall and I was just like, 'Oh my God!' I had never met a celebrity, and to meet a celebrity who's also the president of the label, that was crazy!!"

Luckily Rihanna was able to shake the jitters as soon as she started her impromptu showcase, a performance that forced her future label bosses to sign the deal before she walked out of their offices. "We were there until 4:30 in the morning closing the deal. Every time I signed my name I was just smiling."

Growing up in the parish of St. Michael, Barbados, it never occurred to Rihanna that one day she would be sitting in the company of mega music moguls. Before moving to the US in 2005, Rihanna lived somewhat of a simple life on her home island where she attended high school and like most teenage girls sang songs for fun with her friends. Aside from winning her school's beauty and talent pageant, Rihanna never realized how talented she really was until she attracted the attention of a New York City music producer named Evan Rogers. (Evan and his partner, Carl Sturken, have produced hits for such artists as Christina Aguilera, Ruben Studdard and Kelly Clarkson.) Evan and his Barbadian wife Jackie were vacationing over Christmas near Rihanna’s hometown and through a mutual friend were introduced to the young diva. After hearing her belt out a couple of tunes Evan realized Rihanna’s future star power and invited her to New York to record some tracks.

Rihanna, Evan and Carl ended up creating close to a dozen songs. Together they pulled inspiration from the dancehall and reggae that are embedded in Rihanna’s rich musical culture and fused it with a fresh R&B soul sound - a mixture Rihanna likes to compare to one of her favorite Caribbean dishes, callaloo. "It's like a gumbo or a stew," explains Rihanna. "My music is mostly Caribbean beats mixed with R&B. I don't want to be pigeon holed into being just a dance artist because I can sing too. I have ballads on the album as well as upbeat tracks."

Rihanna’s debut album promises to have all the ingredients that make musical magic. And like her influences Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and Mariah Carey, Rihanna is a talented songwriter who has co-written much of her album. "Music is in my D.N.A.!" es the bright eyed singer. Her first single "Pon De Replay" is sure to mash up dancehalls worldwide with Rihanna’s soul stirring vocals demanding the DJ to play her song again and again 'til it touches every single person within earshot. With tracks featuring both Elephant Man and Vybz Kartel, Rihanna is guaranteed to supply some serious heat for both radio and clubs nationwide.

Rihanna is indeed living a real life Cinderella story. "If I hadn't met Evan and Carl I might have just been dreaming forever," she muses. "I am so thankful for everything they’ve done for me." Soon the whole world will be giving both Rihanna and her producers thanks.

Wentworth Miller

[edit] Early life
Miller was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. His father is of African-American, Jamaican, English, German Jewish, and Cherokee [1] descent, and his mother is of Russian, French, Dutch, Syrian, and Lebanese descent.[2] He was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England where his father, a Rhodes Scholar, was studying.[3]

Miller's family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was one. In an interview, Miller said: "My father is black and my mother is white. Therefore, I could answer to either which kind of makes me a racial Lone Ranger, at times, caught between two communities."[4]

Miller's first three years of high school were spent at Midwood High School in Brooklyn. He then transferred to Quaker Valley Senior High School near Pittsburgh, where he graduated in 1990. In 1995, he graduated from Princeton University with a degree in English. During his time at Princeton, he traveled the world performing with the school's famed a capella group, The Princeton Tigertones. Subsequently, he headed to Los Angeles, California to pursue an acting career. He ended up spending years doing behind-the-scenes work to support himself before devoting himself seriously to auditioning for acting roles.

[edit] Career
Miller's first starring role was as the sensitive and introverted David in ABC's mini-series Dinotopia. After appearing in a few minor television roles, Miller moved on to co-star in the film The Human Stain (2003), playing the younger version of Anthony Hopkins' character.

Miller further increased his profile in 2005 by obtaining the starring role as Michael Scofield in Fox Network's television drama, Prison Break. His performance in the show earned him a 2005 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series.[5]

Also in 2005, Miller made appearances in the music videos of Mariah Carey's "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together". Both music videos were directed by Brett Ratner, who directed the series pilot of Prison Break. According to Brett Ratner on the DVD audio commentary for the "Pilot" episode of Prison Break, Wentworth Miller auditioned for the role of Superman/Clark Kent when the Superman Returns project was still under Ratner's directorial control.

[edit] Personal life
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Miller as "Coleman Silk" in The Human Stain. Š Miramax Films 2003In 2003, Miller was cast as 'Coleman Silk' in The Human Stain. It was revealed that he had an intense personal connection to this mixed-race character. Not only did Miller possess a similar racial background, but he also caused a controversial incident during his time at Princeton for making an apparently derogatory (though misconstrued) remark about African-Americans, much like the character in the movie.

In 1994, while he was a junior at Princeton, Miller published a cartoon in The Daily Princetonian featuring Cornel West teaching an introduction to an African-American Studies course called Rhythm – Why None of You Have It, and How You Can Get It. The cartoon referred to West, who was the Professor of African-American Studies at Princeton University before being hired away by Harvard University, as "newly-purchased", an innocent academic term for newly hired that was taken as a reference to slavery.

The New York Times later published the story about novelist Toni Morrison writing an angry letter to Miller. Despite his multiracial background, Miller was considered a campus racist. Like 'Coleman Silk', Miller declined to explain the reasons behind his action.

After filming The Human Stain, Miller wrote a letter to West apologizing for the cartoon, but received no replies. However, West was present at the premiere of the movie. Incidentally, West is a friend of actress Anna Deavere Smith, who played Coleman Silk's mother in the film. He unexpectedly gave Miller a bear hug (implying to some observers that West had decided to forgive, if not forget, what had happened).[6]

Spoilers end here.
In October, 2006, Wentworth Miller was interviewed by a German journalist, and said that his surname (Miller) happens to be "Müller" in German, which probably came from his German Jewish grandfather.[citation needed]

Only a few words to describe Prison Break. Everyweek I am excited for the 9pm hour to tune in. The trailers did nothing for me, I didn't care about the story I felt like it was kind of stupid to break into prison to break someone out. Nonetheless I gave it a try and I was blown away, the acting, the directing and the writing. Everyweek I am riveted by the strong characters, Lincoln Burrows played by Dominic Percell and Michael Scofield played by Wentworth Miller the simplicity of their characters is played out beautifully, the quiet strength of the characters really appeals to me. Not to mention they are eye-candy.

Prison Break is a nice alternative to the programs on other channels. I rave about it to everyone I know. I am glad that its on Fox because Fox tends to keep shows running for a longer time than other networks, they give the shows time to develop an audience before it gets canceled. I can't wait to see where the story goes.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers are a Grammy Award-winning, four-piece rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983.

Even though they have experienced numerous line-up changes and personal problems, the band has harmoniously fused various elements of alternative rock, punk, funk, heavy metal and psychedelic rock. They are also notable for incorporating hip hop-style rhymes in some of their repertoire.

Their albums have sold approximately 60 million copies worldwide. They also hold the records for most #1 modern rock (10), and most weeks spent atop that chart (76).

Red Hot Chili Peppers (originally Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem) were formed after what was supposed to be a one-time performance in 1983 by Fairfax High School alumni Michael "Flea" Balzary (bass), Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Jack Irons (drums) and Hillel Slovak (guitar). Later in that same year, after becoming a popular draw in the Los Angeles rock scene, they secured a record deal with EMI.

Irons and Slovak viewed the band as a side project, and left the Chili Peppers shortly before their self-titled debut to focus on their original band, What Is This?. Red Hot Chili Peppers, the band's 1984 debut album, was recorded with replacement members Jack Sherman on guitar and Cliff Martinez on drums. Produced by Gang of Four's Andy Gill, the album did not achieve commercial success. The ensuing tour did not fare much better, with internal fighting between Sherman and the rest of the band resulting in him leaving, and Hillel Slovak returning.

Parliament-Funkadelic's George Clinton was hired to produce their second album, 1985's Freaky Styley. Martinéz was fired from the band soon after the release of the album, allowing the return of original drummer Jack Irons in early 1986. During this time, drug problems started to become prevelant with the band. At one point Anthony Kiedis left the band due to his heroin addiction, only to rejoin after getting clean. Hillel was also using heroin but managed to keep himself together and stay in the band.

Their next album became their first enter the Billboard Top 200, 1987's The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, was produced by Michael Beinhorn. This would be the only album to feature the four original members.

During the supporting tour, drug problems came to public light when Slovak relapsed; resulting in erratic behavior and botched performances. Shortly after the band returned from some performances in Europe on June 27, 1988, Slovak was found dead of a heroin overdose. Jack Irons left the band because of Slovak's death, going on to drum with Pearl Jam and Eleven.

The band temporarily employed Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro and former P-Funk guitarist DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, before replacing them with Chad Smith and John Frusciante to record their next album. Mother's Milk was released in August 1989, and gave the band their first top modern rock hits with their tribute ballad to Slovak, "Knock Me Down" [1], and their cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". The album reached #52 on the album charts, the best chart position the band had attained thus far.

Flea's bass style is an amalgamation of funk and blues, borrowing from artists such as Bootsy Collins of Parliament-Funkadelic and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. The groove-heavy, low-tuned melodies, composed through either normal finger style or slapping, have contributed to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' signature style. While Flea's slap bass style was prominent in earlier albums, later albums (post "Blood Sugar Sex Magik") have more melodic basslines.

The guitar styles of the guitarists that have recorded albums with the group share common traits, featuring a sharp, distorted sound with strong range. Replacement players appear to have tried to stay as close as possible to original guitarist Hillel Slovak's style with its heavy blues and funk elements. However, during his short time with the band, Dave Navarro focused on a style rooted in heavy metal, and progressive. Current guitarist John Frusciante brought a more melodic, textured, and deep sound.

Kiedis provides a range of vocal styles for RHCP songs, with his style of rapping and spoken verse (the latter being the primary characteristic of his vocals up to Blood Sugar Sex Magik) complemented with more traditional vocals have helped the band maintain a relatively consistent style.

Chad Smith, starting on the album Mother's Milk, creates incredible pocket grooves. He is most notably known for his extensive use of ghost notes and his ability to put his feeling into the drumset. Chad Smith has such a definable way of grooving that his sound is completely distinct from every other drummer. His cymbals, the Sabian AA line, are loud and expressive, which definitely contribute to the Red Hot Chili Pepper's sound.

John Frusciante

John Anthony Frusciante (IPA pronunciation: [fruƒQntej ]) (born March 5, 1970) is the guitarist of the Californian band Red Hot Chili Peppers, with whom he has performed on five studio recordings (Mother's Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication, By The Way and Stadium Arcadium), three greatest hits packages (What Hits!?, Greatest Hits, and Out in L.A.) and two live albums (Live In Hyde Park and Live at Slane Castle). He also has an active solo career, having released eight albums as well as collaborations with friends Josh Klinghoffer of The Bicycle Thief and Joe Lally of Fugazi.

Frusciante was born in Queens, New York, but moved to Los Angeles at age 12. He is of Italian-American descent and his father, John Frusciante, Sr., was a Juilliard-trained pianist, while his mother, Gail, was a vocalist who gave up her career to be a homemaker. Gail and some of her friends would go on to lend their voices to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song, "Under the Bridge".

Frusciante's family relocated to Tucson, Arizona, and later Florida. After his parents separated, Frusciante and his mother moved to Santa Monica, California.[2] Frusciante became an avid music fan, growing particularly fond of Punk rock. Some of the artists he listened to at this time, such as Jimi Hendrix, the Ramones, Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa, would influence his later musical career.

Even as a teenager, Frusciante was confident that he was a guitar prodigy who would become a rock and roll star. He has claimed that "voices in his head" since childhood, which he often refers to as "spirits", told him that he was going to be a rock guitarist before he had a proper awareness of what a rock star was. He left high school at the age of 16, after taking a proficiency test with his parents' permission, and with their support, he moved into his own place to focus on sharpening his musical skills.[3]

Frusciante first saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers in concert as a teenager and became a devoted fan, especially of the work of original guitarist Hillel Slovak. He learned every guitar and bass part from their first three albums. Slovak, however, died from a heroin overdose in 1988 and drummer Jack Irons left the band due to personal problems related to Slovak's death. Bassist Flea and singer Anthony Kiedis eventually regrouped to continue with the band.

Frusciante had become good friends with D. H. Peligro (drummer for the Dead Kennedys) around 1988, and they often jammed together. One day, Peligro invited Flea to jam with them. The chemistry between the future band mates bore fruit almost instantly, with Flea saying in the liner notes of a recent re-issue of Mother's Milk that that might have been the day that he first played the phenomenal slap bass riff to "Nobody Weird Like Me". Flea was impressed by Frusciante's skill, and since he was looking for a new guitarist (their current replacement for Hillel, Duane "Blackbird" McKnight, was not working out for the band) he called Anthony Kiedis over to watch Frusciante play. It was a unanimous decision: Frusciante was in. Frusciante was about to sign a contract with Thelonious Monster at the time (and had actually been playing with them for two weeks), but Flea and Kiedis immediately fired McKnight and hired Frusciante. Drummer Chad Smith would join the band two weeks prior to recording their first record together.[4]

Around this time, Frusciante also auditioned for Frank Zappa's band but left before the final try-out because Zappa strictly prohibited illegal drug use among musicians in his band. In an interview, he said, "I realized that I wanted to be a rock star, do drugs and get girls, and that I wouldn't be able to do that if I was in Zappa's band."[2]

When Frusciante was asked to join the Chili Peppers he was thrilled, claiming to have "boot marks five feet high on the wall in my room for months after that call."[5

Chad Smith

Chad Gaylord Smith (born on October 25, 1961 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA) is a drummer in the rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He joined the band after Jack Irons quit because of the distress and chaos over Hillel Slovak's death. In 1993, he released "Red Hot Rhythm Method", an educational video for aspiring drummers.

Smith grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and attended Lahser High School but did not graduate. He then worked a series of odd jobs while playing in a slew of bands, most starting with the letter T: Tilt, Tyrant, Terence. One of them, Toby Redd, put out a record; and opened for Kansas. Later, he moved to Los Angeles where he joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. According to Anthony Kiedis' autobiography Scar Tissue, following Smith's first audition for the band, Kiedis told him he was allowed to join the band if he shaved his head, to test Smith's devotion to the band, but mostly because of Kiedis' dislike of Smith's more conformitive Rock & Roll hair style (which Kiedis' likened to a Guns N' Roses look), as it didn't mesh with the band's punk-funk image. Smith came back the next day with his hair still in a bandana, yet was allowed to stay as Kiedis found his obstinancy impressive. Smith's tenacity to keep his long hair was most likely due to Smith's discomfort with his receding hairline.

He was married in 1994 to Maria St. John and together had one child: Manon St. John (1997). He has three other children: Justin (1998), Ava (2000) and Cole (2005). The two divorced but he has recently remarried to an architect named Nancy on May 8, 2004 in Hopetown, Abacos, Bahamas. When not onstage or in the studio Smith enjoys scuba diving, baseball, basketball, and riding his Harleys (he owns a black Road King that he has personally done modifications on, and in a 2006 interview with Modern Drummer magazine, said that his 2003 100th Anniversary issue Soft Tail was his "main mode of transportation"). He also lives in a 1929 Spanish house that Cary Grant and Randolph Scott lived in together from 1932 to 1936. Ex-Deep Purple singer Glenn Hughes recorded an album in Chad's "home studio" in late 2005 - early 2006.

Although he is mainly known as the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smith's drumming is featured on over a hundred albums, not including those recorded with Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has also toured the world extensively performing drum clinics, and recently did a series of clinics with one of his drumming heroes, Deep Purple's Ian Paice.

With numerous platinum recordings under his belt with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chad Smith has gained the recognition he has long deserved by cranking out one hit groove after another.

Flea

Michael (as Flea was then still known) led a relatively conventional family lifestyle in Australia until his father Mick was posted to New York in March 1967 in accordance with his job as a customs officer, taking with him his wife Patricia, daughter Karen and the young Michael. After only four years in the U.S., Michael's mother Patricia met and fell in love with a jazz musician named Walter Urban Jr in 1971, resulting in the divorce of his parents. Michael was again uprooted, this time right across America, as his mother and soon to be stepfather moved with him and his sister to live in Los Angeles in 1972.

Michael developed an enthusiasm in playing music very early, first trying his hand at the drums. However, at the age of nine he took up playing the trumpet and soon proved to be a natural talent. He was so skilled with the instrument, that upon his family's settlement in LA he swiftly earned a place in the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Orchestra. Already so proficient at playing the trumpet, watching his stepfather jamming with his bebop jazz band had a profound effect on the eleven-year-old Balzary, and this fueled his new-found love for jazz and leading exponents of the genre, such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Ornette Coleman. Concerning his singular love for the jazz genre at the time, Balzary confessed to VH1's Behind the Music that he originally had no interest in rock and roll, and his ambition was to become a jazz musician like his stepfather. He was still (and remains to this day) an avid trumpeter and jazz fan when he started at Fairfax High School in September 1976, but this academic shift also brought about a fateful meeting that would change his life forever.

Flea's bass-slapping technique is unique and was a major influence on other bands even before the Red Hot Chili Peppers broke into the mainstream, which is why, on their breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik he refused to use the technique in the same way, to avoid it being imitated (As stated personally by Flea in the documentary of Blood Sugar, "Funky Monks"). Flea's style is influenced by Bootsy Collins, funk music and by the energy of early punk rock bands such as Black Flag.

Anthony Kiedis

Anthony Kiedis was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to John Kiedis (also known as Spider or Blackie Dammett) and Margaret "Peggy" Idema, and has two half-sisters, Julie and Jenny and a half-brother, James. His parents divorced in 1968 when he was five. He lived with his mother in Grand Rapids until he was eleven, then moved to California with his father, who was an actor in Los Angeles. His great-grandfather, Anton Kiedis, was Lithuanian, and his father's mother has some Mohican blood. His godfather was Sonny Bono, and Kiedis even went on a skiing trip with his godfather and Cher. [1]

Kiedis spent much of his youth listening to Sly Stone, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Stevie Wonder, artists who would eventually shape the Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound. Around the age of fifteen, while a student at Fairfax High School, he met Michael Balzary and Hillel Slovak, with whom he would eventually go on to form a band. He went on to study at UCLA, but dropped out after losing interest. After dropping out of UCLA, Kiedis began living with his friend Flea and eventually decided to form a band with him, Hillel Slovak, and Jack Irons. Initially, the group was named Tony Flow & The Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. Hillel was in the band Anthym at this time.

According to his autobiography, Kiedis used to adopt the role of a "protector" in school, defending all the kids who were outcast or bullied. When future bandmate Flea was playfully putting Kiedis's friend in a headlock, he told Flea to back off. When the misunderstanding was revealed, they became friends.

According to his memoir, his father introduced him to drugs at the age of twelve. Later in life, he had many struggles with drug addiction, including heroin and cocaine. He tried to get clean after the heroin overdose death of Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak in 1988, saying he would never shoot up again. He entered rehab and ended up staying clean for 5 years, but relapsed after receiving drugs at a dentist's and getting high off of them. He went in and out of rehab and relapsed many times during the next few years. He has purportedly avoided another relapse since December of 2000.

In 2004 Kiedis published a memoir named Scar Tissue, which peaked at number 17 on the New York Times Bestseller List.[1]. It is a detailed insight to Kiedis's life from a rebellious child to a rockstar.
